For someone who lives with five indoor cats and a dog, I can clearly say there are more than a hundred reasons why cats make such great pets, but for now, let’s start with my top 10 really awesome reasons.
- They are peaceful creatures
Life in any city can be chaotic; most of us want to come back to a peaceful home. Cats make for such charming companions. They don’t make too much noise, their calm and composed demeanor is something you’ll grow to love but also want to emulate in your own life. Their meowing is subtle and they only meow to communicate with their pet parents.
- Longer lifespan
I’m sure we all wish that our pets lived forever, or at least as long as we do. There might be a little bit of consolation here, most healthy indoor cats that are neutered and vaccinated can certainly live 12-plus years. Many cats live a good deal longer.
- No more nocturnal unpleasantries
Even as indoor pets, cats are built to hunt down prey that may come their way: bugs, mice, and other insects. The cat’s very presence and scent can work as a repellent to deter rodents and other nocturnal unpleasantries from entering your home.
- Growing up with cats can lead to fewer allergies
A research study conducted by NIH (National Institutes of Health) found that children under the age of one who are exposed to a cat were less likely to develop allergies or asthma. This finding wasn’t restricted to pet allergies but also other common allergies from grass, ragweed, and dust mites.
- Stay healthy with cats
Studies (National Center for Biotechnology Information) have suggested that being around cats has a calming effect on human beings. Petting their soft fur, healing vibrations from their purring have been scientifically proven to lower blood pressure and reduce the risk of heart attack or a stroke by up to 30 percent.
- Cats are independent
You could leave a cat alone for a day with sufficient food, water, and a clean litter box and come back to an absolutely normal pet—not anxious without you. Cats are creatures who love solitude and can stay by themselves without much attention. Also, cats can sleep easily anywhere between 12-16 hours a day, so you don’t have to feel guilty about leaving them home alone.
- They cost much lesser to care for
From the vet bills to the food, litter, and other pet supplies and accessories, caring for a cat will definitely cost a good deal less caring for a medium-sized dog.
- Training them is simple
When the kitten is fed and placed in the litter box, it knows exactly what to do. They also learn to groom themselves from their mother cat. Even when you change homes, they instinctively know through their smart noses where the litter box, food tray, and water bowl are located.
- Awesome pets for the apartment lifestyle
Some people are reluctant to get a pet because they think it’s tricky to raise a pet in an apartment. The good news is that cats themselves find various ways and means in which they keep themselves entertained. Therefore, they don’t have special needs or require long walks for exercise.
- Low maintenance
They are truly low maintenance, don’t need formal training, don’t have special needs or requirements for exercise, or to be taken out for a walk. They groom themselves, although some long-haired breeds might need grooming. Cats don’t need as many baths as other pets.
Beyond all the logical, scientific, and researched reasons, cats love you as much as any other pet would. They understand your mood shifts and will sometimes entertain you with their funny gimmicks to bring back your smile.
If in this lifetime you can enjoy the company of one or more cats, it will be so rewarding.
